St Stephens v Whitchurch
WHITCHURCH inflicted a crushing defeat upon a below strength St Stephens.
Whitchurch lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Opener Pete Freedman was out early, bowled by Simon Watson, but then Mark Warwick and Richard Hall shared a 150-run stand for the second wicket before Warwick was caught in the deep by Watson off the bowling of Gordon Littlejohns.
Hall went on to score a magnificent 126 not out ably supported by Ian Gray (42 not out) and the Whitchurch innings closed at 276 for 2 from 40 overs.
For St Stephens, only Watson (21) and John Sleep (15) reached double figures. Tom Ingram claimed the first 4 wickets for 22 runs and John Townsend took three wickets in one over to finish with 3 for 9.
The other successful bowlers were the Freedman brothers Richie and Pete who took 1 for 11 and 1 for 1 respectively.
Mark Warwick held three catches and Bill Tynan had a good day behind the stumps with two catches and a stumping.
St Stephens were all out for 62, a losing margin of 214 runs. Whitchurch took 20 points, St Stephens 1 point.
