Duchy Premier Torpoint 2 Gunnislake 4 AS with most teams Gunnislake have played little football in the past two months and this was only their second fixture in that time. Last time out, on the final Saturday of 2007, Gunnislake produced a poor performance and this prompted a stern but constructive pre match talk from managers Mark Vernon and Tim May. This had the desired effect as Gunnislake arguably produced their best performance this season in terms of effort and commitment, while there was some good passing football to go with it. Both sides started the match with great purpose and posed the opposing defences several aproblems. Gunnislake defended the better aided by a couple of wayward finishes while Torpoint's rearguard struggled and were duly punished. Five minutes in and Stef Kelly for Gunnislake received a throw in that he centred for Darren Woolley to head home. Woolley soon added a second when a Torpoint throw in to their keeper saw the latter mishit his clearance and under pressure from Woolley enabling the forward to chase down the loose ball and tap home from close range. George Leighton and new signing Matt Reid for Gunnislake combined to create the third goal that Jarryd Kelly scored at the second attempt after his initial eight yard shot rebounded back off the post. Three up inside 20 minutes the game continued to be end to end as the hosts were not prepared to lie down and be beaten. Five minutes before halftime Torpoint reduced the arrears from close range when the Gunnislake backline failed to deal with a high ball in to the area. Before the turnaround the visitors had regained their their goal lead thanks entirely to Jarryd Kelly. The young striker robbed a defender by the corner flag, evaded another before cutting in off the touchline and going past two further Torpoint challenges and then striking home in to the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area for a brilliant solo goal. The second half was equally as entertaining as the first. Torpoint did however have the greater share of the attacking play. Gunnislake defended well as a team restricting the hosts to only a handful of openings and while they had less attacks Gunnislake created as many good chances as they exposed the gaps left by the marauding Torpoint team. Having had one effort hit the post the hosts did pull a goal back with 15 minutes. With five minutes left Torpoint were generously awarded a penalty that if scored would have made for a nervy conclusion to the game. However the penalty struck the post and was cleared away to safety as Gunnislake claimed a hard earned but deserved three points. l Gunnislake's reserve team hosted near neighbours St Dominick in the Duchy reserve cup and lost out in a tight match by the odd goal in five. Division one Saints goals came from a Nathan Holter penalty after Jason Gregory was brought down in the box. Mike Fitze levelled before Neil Kinger gave Saints the lead. Gregory brought matters level and the game was won by Dan Jones. l Gunnislake's reserve team travel to Stratton this Saturday for a league encounter while their premier team are without a fixture.
