FORMER Tavistock College student Conrad Harpham (left) has won a place in the final of the national Guitarist Of The Year competition.

Conrad will compete for the coveted accolade against four other finalists from around the UK at a live event in London on June 4.

The competition, run by Guitarist Magazine, attracts many thousands of entries.

It is not the first time it has recognised Devon talent. In 2003, the title was won by another Devon guitarist, Jas Morris, of The Morris Brothers Band and Rude Tiger.

Conrad, who teaches guitar to private clients and at several schools in South Devon, has been playing the instrument for 20 years. He is also regularly seen performing with South Devon band Soul Funktion, as well as with his own three-piece group The Conrad Harpham Band.

Conrad said: 'There are some strong players competing, but I'm looking forward to the experience, and hopefully bringing the prize back to Devon once again.'

The winner will take home a guitar worth around £2,500, plus a contract to perform and teach at festival events in 2012.
