TAVISTOCK District Guiders, guides, parents and Trefoil Guild members joined together recently to celebrate a raft of awards given to all levels of the local guiding movement.
Pat Warne, chairperson of Tavistock Guide Hall, gave a short report about future repair and funding requirements of this historic town building.
Diane Dingle, Emma Hogg and Lucinda Grice were congratulated on achieving their adult leadership qualifications and are now helping at units in the area.
Lucinda also revealed what was needed to gain her silver Duke of Edinburgh award received last November.
Two Baden Powell Challenges were presented to Ailish Piper and Pip Tigwell after they each completed ten individual, personal challenges, plus a residential activity weekend working with Guides from across Devon — this is the highest award within the Guide section.
Camp permits went to Laura Hooper and Ailish Piper who each planned, organised and ran a two-night camp for four, to gain the award.
The audience was also treated to two presentations highlighting the efforts made by three young Tavistock leaders when they travelled to Everest.
Cathy Warne and Zoe Viggers took part in the highest tethered balloon record of 2007, and Emma Hogg, and Zoe, achieved a Guiding Mountain Top Moment at 18,500 near Everest Base Camp last August, and also supported the Macmillan Cancer Charity Highest Coffee Morning campaign while there.
Vicki Austin and Rica Olver were given their 10 and 20-year long service awards respectively.
Tavistock has a thriving Guiding membership, encompassing Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units, offering many opportunities to extend the girls' personal goals and experiences, enabling them to develop confidence as they learn the skills of good citizenship. This can only be achieved with the commitment and effort of the volunteer leadership teams which run the units.
