THE new Tavy and Tamar Apple Group is looking to increase support for local growers and is also looking for new members.
Orchards in the Tamar Valley have had a particularly profound resurgence in recent years.
The group is keen to increase support for growers with the purchase of its own apple press, crusher, pasteuriser and bottle filler — all of which will be mounted on a trailer. This will be available for hire to trained operators within Devon and Cornwall. Significant funding towards this project has already been secured.
In addition to holding the equipment, the group will also have a training and educational role in anything involving apples and orchards, whether it is one tree or a hundred. It also hopes to assist producers with information on marketing and production of apples and apple products.
Group member Brian Lamb said that apart from the richness of their wildlife, traditional orchards could make an economically valuable contribution to the locally distinctive character and quality of Devon and Cornwall's landscape.
At one time every farm and large garden would have had its own orchard of mixed fruit trees for domestic and other uses, including folklore and festivals.
