CALSTOCK Rowing Club took an active part in the second Cornish Rowing Association regatta of the season on Saturday at Saltash.
On a beautiful summers day, races started from underneath the Brunel Bridge with rowing up toward Cargreen — there were 15 races in total, with Calstock having at least one crew and sometimes two crews entered for all but two of the races.
Highlights of the day were the U18s girls crew of Rosie Bradley, Evie Reynolds, Lorna Murray, Daisy Roberts and Ben Bradley (cox) coming first, Rosie Bradley winning the U16s girl pair of paddles, U14s crew of Martha Roberts, Beccy Ives, Issie Edwards, Grace Murray and Conor Clark (cox) battling to second place.
In the senior races Calstock were third in the senior mixed four oar and a creditable fourth in the ladies four oar, the crew of Ley Roberts, Sally Copson-Ball, Leigh Anne Alford, Sue Ives and Ruby Roberts (cox) pushing Penryn all the way. Calstock were third in the men's Cornish Ran Dan and a second place in the men's four race. The men's four crew of Sam North, Ali Trotter, Nick Bradley, Conor Clark and Ruby Roberts (cox) managed Calstock's best placing for more than 20 years and they were only a length away from winning the race beaten by Polperro in boat number 48.
Due to a fall on the slipway normal cox Ben Bradley was ruled out, so 8 year-old Ruby Roberts stepped up to cox the men having only ever coxed one race before..the ladies earlier in the day.
The next regatta is Polperro on Saturday starting at 11.15am from the harbour another 15 race programme is set out.
This year's Calstock Regatta and Fete will be on July 23 and 24 and promises to be a superb family day out as always.
