FOUR thousand acorns have been planted on the banks of the Teign Gorge on the Castle Drogo Estate as part of a plan to regenerate oak woodland on the site.

Teign Valley warden Mike Jones said using acorns was a much cheaper and more natural way of encouraging regeneration as it would cost around £10,000 to buy and plant a similar number of saplings.

The work by National Trust staff and volunteers was carried out on a two-acre site following the removal of conifer plantations on land the National Trust bought about eight years ago at Hannicombe Wood.
