THE clergy's equivalent of the OBE has been awarded to Rev Anthony Geering of Chagford who has been appointed to join the College of Canons at Exeter Cathedral.

Rev Geering — who is also in charge of the parishes of Drewsteignton, Hittesleigh, Spreyton, Gidleigh and Throwleigh — is one of nine new prebendaries or canons recognised for their contribution to the life of the church in Devon.

The former Rector of Crediton said it was a great honour.

'I am very proud to receive this recognition which is for rectors who have being around a long time,' he said.

'I spent 15 years at Crediton before moving to Chagford and before that I was in Barnstaple.'

There are now 26 prebendaries in the College of Canons which also includes the Dean of Exeter, the Suffragan Bishops of the Diocese and the Archdeacons.

Rev Geering said it was a bit like being in the House of Lords where people from the grass roots like himself would come to the centre or headquarters of the church in Devon and share some of their experience over the years.

With his new title comes a 'rather glorious and rather expensive' red cassock and a seat in Exeter Cathedral.

He will also be asked to preach a sermon at least once a year at the cathedral, share in diocesan events and represent the communities of Devon at prestigious events such as royal visits.
