Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one East

Okehampton Argyle 3

Galmpton United and Torbay Gents 3

THIS was a great result for Okehampton against a Galmpton side lying sixth in the table and who with games in hand could still have a say in the championship this season.

Even more impressive was that Argyle fought back from 3-0 down, having seen two crucial players leave the field with injuries midway through the first half.

The game started off in a low-key fashion and neither side made any clear-cut chances in the first half hour. During this time, Argyle lost defender Mark Burdus with a hamstring injury and were dealt a further blow when influential midfielder Ed Squire had to leave the field with an ankle injury 10 minutes before half-time.

Then in a six minute spell just before the break the game seemed to move out of Okehampton's reach. On 39 minutes, Galmpton took the lead when Ty Hawkin finished from close range after Okes' keeper Neil Clift had done brilliantly to keep out his first attempt. A minute later, Kevin Wills easily outpaced Okehampton substitute Stuart Cann, carrying the ball 30 yards before blasting home from the edge of the box.

Right on the stroke of half-time, it looked all over for Argyle as Kevin Wiltshire headed home a deep free kick at the far post to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

The Okehampton faithful feared a landslide in the second half, but Argyle came out and pressed Galmpton back showing real fighting spirit.

Stuart Entwhistle and George Pitts were outstanding in the Okehampton midfield and Colin Marshall showed some clever touches. At the back, Mike Vernon had a brilliant second half and Chris Wills hardly put a foot wrong. Substitute Ben Harris had to play in the unaccustomed position of left full back and was also outstanding in the second half.

On 57 minutes, Steve Kinsey picked up the ball from a corner and floated the ball in to the far post, where George Pitts headed home to score his first ever goal for Argyle.

Four minutes later, Stuart Entwhistle burst through the middle of the Galmpton defence and coolly beat the keeper to put Argyle back in the game.

Galmpton came back at Okehampton, and Neil Clift made a brilliant one handed save to keep Argyle in with a chance. When Matt Mortimer was sent off 10 minutes from time for a second yellow card, it looked all over for Argyle, but showing great fighting spirit, they continued to press Galmpton.

With six minutes remaining, a right wing corner from Colin Marshall was headed into the box by Steve Williams, and Stuart Entwhistle showed superb control to turn and fire home from close range, ensuring a well deserved share of the spoils for Okehampton.
