A NEW recycling service is being launched in West Devon, thanks to a grant of more than £100,000 to improve facilities within the borough.
The money has been granted to West Devon Borough Council by the National Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund, part of a Government scheme to help local authorities improve their recycling initiatives.
The money means three specific projects can be carried out during the next financial year.
The council will be able to introduce ten new plastic bottle banks throughout West Devon which are able to squash and collect plastic milk bottles on site.
The authority will also be able to purchase a can compactor, enabling the transportation of steel and aluminium cans more effectively.
The money will also mean depot buildings used to store recycled materials collected during the weekly rounds can be improved.
Helen Dobby, West Devon?s contracts manager, said the additional money would help the borough?s recycling programme ? but the real success of the scheme still depended on the residents who took part.
She urged everyone to support the environment by continuing to recycle using the green box scheme and special banks situated throughout the borough.
