TAVISTOCK?s Stannary Brass Band has this week received a cash boost from the National Lottery?s Awards for All scheme. The band has been granted £3,225, which musical director Peter Jones said will be put towards new musical equipment plus arranging workshops and fundraising events. Mr Jones said: ?The main bulk of the money is for a new euphonium. It?s our tenth anniversary this year and we started from scratch, so we?ve been slowly trying to buy new instruments ? this is another step along the way. ?We?re also putting in some money for a new baritone as well. It takes a lot of money to buy brass instruments ? the four tubas we bought to start with we paid £12,500 for ? the list price was £21,000.? Mr Jones said the band was ?very pleased indeed? with the cash boost from the Awards for All organisation. ?It?s actually the second time we have had a grant from them, so we?ve obviously proved ourselves to be a worthwhile, ongoing cause,? he said. Mr Jones said the band now numbers around 90 members in total, aged from around seven upwards. ?We go right across the board ? and right across the board in standards too. ?We have a beginners? band, a training band, a youth band and a senior band ? it doesn?t matter what standard you are, you can pretty much slot in,? said Mr Jones. The band is due to perform in Tavistock as part of the Tavistock Sings! musical festival in May, they have a date in Woolwell later the same month, but their main event of the year will be a special tenth birthday celebration concert in September in Tavistock Town Hall. The Awards for All scheme gives grants of between £500 and £5,000 to help make a difference to local communities. Steve Barriball, senior awards officer, said: ?We fund projects so that people can take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities. ?We also fund projects that promote education, the environment and health through the scheme.?
