Moretonhampstead is this week celebrating a huge boost, following the announcement it has scooped a grant of more than half a million pounds.
The £505,272 grant will provide a new multi-activity centre to be built on the town?s playing fields.
It will include a sports hall with climbing wall, a fitness suite, a youth room, bar and social area and new changing facilities for indoor and outdoor sports. It is hoped the project will be completed by December next year.
Also included in the scheme is the appointment of a part-time sports development worker to promote the new centre during its first two years.
The King George V Playing Fields Trust will own and run the centre.
Playing fields chairman Graham Austin said: ?This has been a great effort by the whole community. We?d like to thank everyone who helped with fundraising, and everyone who has worked on the project so far.?
Steve Melia, community development manager, said: ?This new centre will transform sports and leisure in Moreton. We?ve got a lot of work to make sure it opens on time ? then we?ve got some demanding targets, to get more people playing, more people active.
?We have a great team here, and I?m sure we can do it.?
The grant was awarded by Active England, in a joint programme between Sport England and the Big Lottery Fund.
It has been matched locally by funds from Teignbridge District Council, Dartmoor National Park Authority, Moretonhampstead Parish Council and £35,000 worth of local fundraising.
Businesses supporting the project include John Dodds Architects, Graham Austin Services, Arcofast Ltd and E and JW Glendinning Ltd.
