A COUPLE who this week visited Tavistock for the first time are appealing for information regarding the town?s former grammar school, now known as the Alexander Centre. Alan Harrison and his wife Theresa live in Ross-on-Wye ? Theresa?s grandfather was John James Alexander, the former head of the grammar school in the early 1900s. Mr Harrison said: ?We have only just started our family research but it has been extremely interesting and it is building up a picture for us of Theresa?s ancesters.? Mr Harrison said John James Alexander had three children, the eldest of whom was Arthur Francis O?Donnell Alexander ? Theresa?s father. Mr Harrison said he and his wife loved Tavistock and had been very pleased to meet local historian Gerry Woodcock and town resident John Collacott, who has been closely involved with the Alexander Centre. ?They have been extremely helpful and went of their way to ensure we had more to research. ?My wife never had a photo of her grandfather and thanks to these two people, she now has six pictures. We have also seen where he lived, at 59 West Street and 6 Woburn Terrace, in Plymouth Road,? said Mr Harrison. He said he and his wife would be very pleased to hear from anyone who might have information, pictures or passed down memories of the former grammar school or its headmaster from around the period 1900 to 1920. Mr and Mrs Harrison can be contacted on 01989 567001.
