FOR a term in 1966 I taught languages at Okehampton Grammar. The lower fourth was full of lively children and when I left there was a collection and I was presented with a brass ashtray and letter opener. The sixth form wrote me kind letters even though my desire to read more than the set books probably cost them their A levels. I was told I would forget them all. I didn't, but I did move and travel constantly for work and the letters got lost. Eventually even the brass ashtray got lost somewhere between New York and Geneva. The letter opener lasted a little while longer. Now back in Devon, I should love to send greetings to those grown children, because I have always thought of them with smiling affection.
