NOT many schools can claim to have had an Olympian take part in their sports day — but now Shebbear College can.

Okehampton Olympian Georgina Geikie visited the college and was involved with shooting competitions throughout the day, offering students professional coaching on pistol and air rifle shooting before they took part in their competition.

Georgina, known as Gorgs, is Britain's No. 1 lady pistol shooter, and cemented her name in history as a member of Great Britain's best ever Olympic team at London 2012.

A former pupil of South Tawton Primary and Okehampton College, Gorgs competed in the .22 sport pistol and air pistol events during the first week of the Olympics.

Her sporting career started with Chagford Pony Club at the age of five, then tetrathlon — running, swimming, shooting and riding — and modern pentathlon before concentrating on her main strength of shooting once she finished university.

A true athlete, Gorgs has taken part in competitive sports all her life, including cross country, athletics, county level netball, hockey, and tennis. She has also studied fencing so she could take part in modern pentathlon.

Gorgs was assisted on the day by the Shebbear Shooters, an airgun sporting club based in Shebbear. The club covers many disciplines and has the use of a four acre field adjacent to the college where they concentrate on outdoor airgun sport. The club uses lightweight sport rifles for indoor competitions in the village hall.

Following the day's sporting events Georgina presented medals, certificates and trophies to delighted students during a ceremony in the new assembly hall. A gallery of photographs can be seen on the college website at http://www.shebbearcollege.co.uk">www.shebbearcollege.co.uk
