Tavistock Athletic Club competed in the South West Inter Counties Cross Country championships on Sunday.

Several members of the club had been selected to run for either Devon or Cornwall after doing well in their county championships. For some this was their first opportunity to proudly wear their county vests.

The event took place at RNAS Merryfield in Somerset. It was a very challenging course with the recent wet weather turning long sections into a quagmire. Tavistock athletes showed great determination and agility and despite coming back plastered in mud all said they enjoyed the challenge.

Among many good performances, some highlights for TAC were: Nikki Kelly 20th senior women and 2nd Devon runner to finish, Ewan Dix and Charlotte Walker were both the leading Devon runners in the under 17 races. The under 13 girls team came fourth which is amazing for a small town in a region that stretches from Cornwall to Gloucestershire.

This is a busy period for the club. There are three more races in the Westward League. TAC are currently in medal positions in several age categories and will be hoping to retain or even improve upon these positions. Several of the athletes who competed at the South West championships will also be selected to represent Devon or Cornwall in the National Inter Counties competition which takes place in March.
