THE ideal golfing conditions as the first of the 114 competitors left the first tee in pursuit of the May medal were reflected in the returned scores: Division One: K Harkness 71 net 61, K Cornwall 69 net 64, J Gillard 76 net 65 and M Hooper 76 net 66 on the back 9. Division two: J Rattenbury 76 net 62; A Beer 81 net 63, E Moriarty 81 net 65 and B May 80 net 66 on back 9. Division 3: R Weller 85 net 63 (back 9), J Haley 91 net 63; D Grimes 92 net 64 and P L Grimley 87 net 65 (back 9). The Mail on Sunday team played Churston in the fourth round. Unfortunately the first loss of the season was recorded with the single figured handicap County players from Churston beating Okehampton ladies 4-1. Two matches went to the 18th hole, two to the 17th and the one that finished on the 14th was an Okehampton win. Although Okehampton ladies were disappointed it has been a very good run to get as far as this round. Ninety nine ladies from Devon and surrounding counties played in Okehampton?s Ladies? 3 Ball Open. The winning visitors? score by Mrs Crouch, Mrs Gorman and Mrs Widdowson from Teignmouth was an excellent 74 points. Second, also from Teignmouth were Melanie Johns, Audrey Reeve and Mandy Dalton, third were Edna Devetta, Ann Vincent from East Devon with Cherry James, Okehampton, also with 70 points. Losing on the back 9 were Sophie Button, June Mitchell and S Marlew from Crediton. Fifth place, winning on the back 6 holes, were Barbara Porter (Tavistock), Val Raine (Launceston) and Dawn Phillott (Okehampton). The winning home team was made up of Lin Atkinson, Jane Warren and Beth Radcliffe, with a fantastic 77 points, second were Lorna Rolfe, Mo Huggins and C Boothroyd with 73 points. There were eight ?twos? on the day, each worth 16 balls. On Friday with the Sheelah Creasy team playing Ilfracombe at home, another great match took place. Played with a different team that had played in the away fixture, due to exams and holidays, this time Mary Keir went first and she had a 2-1 win, second out was Chris Stevens, who had an emphatic 8-6 win. Third out was Maureen Willcocks, who also won 2-1, next was Sally Griffin with another good 5-4 win. Doris Jewell eventually won 1 up, Pat Kirby lost 4-3 and last out with another wonderful 7-6 win was Gladys Thatcher. This gave Okehampton ladies another great victory of 14 points to 3.
