'IT'S GOOD to talk' —that is the advice from a mental health recovery worker, for those recently made redundant in Okehampton.

Carol Barwell from Rethink, the UK's leading mental health charity, said she wanted to reach out to the community and offer some practical advice on how to manage through difficult periods.

'Working for Rethink as part of a Devon Community Opportunities team, I have been visiting Okehampton almost daily now for two years.

'During that time I have met many people in the area and I have a great fondness for Okehampton and its community.

'Talking to people recently it has become more apparent how many people are affected by the redundancies, either directly or indirectly.'

As a recovery worker, Carol works with people to help them regain their confidence and provide help and support on issues including mental health, daily living, education, leisure, faith, volunteering and employment opportunities.

Carol said: 'I felt I wanted to reach out to the community and offer some practical advice on how to manage through difficult periods.

'We are aware that people can feel uncomfortable talking about how they are feeling, but it's important to bear in mind that one in four people will experience some form of mental health problem at some point in their lives, so don't feel awkward.

'Talking is not a sign of weakness, it's part of taking care of yourself.

'People should also stay active, eat well, drink sensibly and stay in touch with the people who are important in our lives.

'Communication is good for your mental health.'
