AN OKEHAMPTON trio will be teeing-off for top heart charity British Heart Foundation in one of the firm favourites in the junior golf competition calendar next week.

Okehampton College Golf Team will start their bid for the British Heart Foundation Junior Golf Championship at the Exeter Golf and Country Club on Thursday, March 25.

Steven Hill, 16, Darren Prowse, 16, and Ricky Wooldridge, 16, will begin their countrywide campaign by playing against other local schools and junior golf club teams, while raising money for the British Heart Foundation through sponsorship.

The championship gives aspiring golfers the chance to play at some of the country?s finest golf courses.

It is the only contest in the UK open to players of all levels under the age of 18.

Since it was launched in 1993, nearly 25,000 teams have taken part in the annual event, raising a total of £961,806 for the Foundation.

Julie Sorrell, head of events for the BHF said: ?This unique event provides a great opportunity for young golfers in the Okehampton area to compete on a national level and encourage enthusiasm for the sport, while alerting them to the problems of heart disease and the importance of raising funds for the cause.?

The top three teams from each of the preliminary rounds will be awarded medals for their achievements, with the two highest scoring teams going through to the regional finals.

The six highest fundraising teams from all the preliminary rounds in each region will also win a place in the next round.

The national final will take place at The Belfrey in September.
