THE cream certainly came to the top at Sandwell Park as Tavistock won the Champion Club title despite an agonising five hour wait.

Represented by golfing father and son pair Graham and James Ruth and Alan Gawman, they finished with a two under par total of 282, a stroke ahead of Rotherham and two clear of Worksop.

With two cards from three to count, Tavistock, who led by one overnight, added 143 to their first round 139 thanks to a second 70 from England international James Ruth and 73 from Gawman.

After teeing off in the morning the Tavistock trio set the target then sat around in the sunshine waiting to see if anyone could match their superb efforts.

None did, although it was close, but the long wait was well worth it for Tavistock as they gave Devon its first victory ion the event.

Rotherham were always in the hunt especially when Neil Walker equalled the course record with 65, but their next best was 73 from Sam Haywood, which meant they came up a shot short.

It was a similar story with Worksop although the Notts boys were a threat until Martin Foulkes bogeyed the last two holes for a 71 which added to an identical return from Peter Wheatcroft, meant they also fell short.

Walker, the 20 year old from Rotherham, had an eagle and four birdies in his 65, an impressive round that was made up of six threes and 12 fours.

The best combined return of the day was 136 which hoisted West Essex from 20th to fourth, Ross Spurgeon returning 66 and Oliver Fisher 70.

Spurgeon?s 65 was matched by Rob Leonard from Harpenden Common, while Austin Brydon from Royal Norwich went round in 67.

But it was Tavistock who reigned supreme and they will represent England in the European Champion Club tournament at Glyfada in Athens on 4-7 November.
