TAVISTOCK Rotary Club's annual charity golf tournament held recently at the town's golf club attracted 105 players, forming 35 teams who enjoyed a good day on the course.

The club was able to donate £2,000 from the money raised to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. The cheque was accepted by Mike Date, a volunteer worker with the trust, who said that 25% of their income is donated from fundraising events such as this.

Around 20,000 rescues have been carried out since the start in 1992 and around four and a half-million pounds a year is needed to keep the service airborne. Next year an extra million pounds will be required to fund its night-time standby programme.

Tavistock Rotary president Trevor Williams said that in many ways the Devon Air Ambulance was a local charity and with Dartmoor on our doorstep comes into its own with the ability to access many remote and difficult to reach places quickly, often making the difference between life and death in extreme cases of emergency.

Mr Williams expressed thanks to members of the Rotary club for the great deal of work put into organising the tournament as well as to the teams of players, sponsors and contributors for supporting the event so generously.
