TAVISTOCK residents will be able play their part in the production of a work of art being produced later this year, to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the granting of the town?s market charter. Cllr Iain Andrews, chairman of the charter group which is organising a year-long programme of celebrations, said four artists were submitting ideas for a lasting commemoration of the celebrations. The ideas will be released to the public at a special launch on Friday February 25 by Tavistock mayor Jenny Metcalf. Cllr Andrews said: ?They are going to explain their projects and we will have four boards with examples of their previous work, what they envisage for Tavistock, and the background of why they have decided to do their particular ideas.? He said the four artists had submitted wide ranging ideas for a piece of art to complement the charter celebrations. The launch will take place in Tavistock Library, where the four concepts will be based during the next fortnight. Slips will be available for the public to vote for the idea they like the best. Cllr Andrews urged people to come to the library on either the launch night or during the following two weeks to see what was being suggested. Moira Andrews, events organiser for the charter group, said: ?This is a perfect opportunity for members of the community to have their say and make their choice. ?After the end of the two weeks, we will add the votes up and see which artist has really captured the imagination of the community.? The launch takes place at 6.30pm ? all are welcome.
