FREE blood pressure checks will be on offer in Okehampton on Saturday as part of Okehampton Rotary Club?s support of Stroke Awareness Day.
This is the second year running that the Rotary Club has helped facilitate the Stroke Association?s Stroke Awareness programme.
The checks will be on offer at the Rotary Club coffee morning in the Charter Hall this Saturday, between 9am and noon.
Last year, 130,000 people across the country had their blood pressure checked courtesy of Rotary International.
President John Stevens said: ?Okehampton Rotary is delighted to be associated with the Stroke Association on this Rotary initiative. It is a simple exercise which for some people will have a life-saving effect.
?Why not have your blood pressure checked and then enjoy a cup of coffee, buy one of the scrumptious cakes and try your luck in the grand draw??
Following the measurement, people may be advised by the medical staff to seek further advice from their GP.
High blood pressure is a silent killer and the greatest risk factor for having a stroke.
People with high blood pressure are seven times more likely to suffer from stroke illness which affects 100,000 new individuals every year.
l This week is a busy week for the members of Okehampton Rotary as this evening (Thursday) they host the Exeter Police and Community Choir in Concert at the Octagon Theatre.
All proceeds are going to the Radio Devon Chestnut Appeal. A few tickets are still available and some will also be sold on the door on the night.
Mr Stevens said: ?This will be a good evening?s entertainment as the Police Choir are giving a very varied programme?.
He said the organisers were also delighted to have Nadrah Al-Shawi as a guest soloist for the evening.
