TAMAR and Tavy gig rowers hit the water with gusto at Cawsand for Rame Gig Club?s annual regatta, enjoying a dry day with calm seas and fine hospitality. The Weir Quay-based club drew a wide selection of rowers; regulars and not so regular, young and old, experienced and ?first years? - and all gave the boat Ginette a good haul around the course. The men?s A, coxed by Nell Trotter, of Calstock, put in a strong performance despite some sickness in the ?engine house? of the boat. John Hillson, of Bere Alston, Tom Sargeant, also of the Peninsula, Andy Arscott, of Horrabridge, Garreth Browne, of Tavistock and South Africa, Simon Brownley, of Hatherleigh, and Matthew Pinney, of Tavistock, showed what a diverse bunch can do when pulling together. The ladies? A coxed by Jack Baker of Millbrook had a crew of equally wide ranging rowers from Liskeard to Lamerton who got together for the first time this season. Stroke Kate Reeves (BA), Sam Adlam (Trehunist), Julie Williams (Lamerton), Chrissy Baker (Millbrook), Nell Trotter and Carolyn Dawe (Bere Ferrers) showed admirable stridency as they showed neighbouring gig club Calstock the value of experience. Next up were the veteran men who have put in a lot of work over the summer and though they have a little way to go before they claim the vets? champions title held by the ladies of the club, showed they can fight as hard as anyone. Cox Carolyn Dawe, Rae Bullough (BF), Rob Dawe (BF), Jonathan Young (BF), Peter Clarke (Peter Tavy), Paul Fletcher (BF) and Mike Barnes (BF) gave a good show with those new to the club and rowing facing off pre-race nerves. The mixed crew gave Ginette her last run of the day, again coxed by Nell, John Hillson, Julie Eastaugh (Yelverton), Garreth Browne, Tom Sargeant, Tricia Stewart (Horrabridge) and Viv Barnes (BF), were a crew of varied experienced but equal quantities of determination. Hopefully, the race pace has inspired both the ladies and the men to get together more crews for the Cornish Pilot Gig Association?s championships at Newquay in September.
