A 'FANTASTIC' evening is promised tomorrow night (Friday) in Tavistock when the annual Dickensian late night shopping event takes place from 6pm to 9pm.

There will be mulled wine and mince-pies for the shoppers and treats all along the main thoroughfare from stilt walkers, jugglers, Morris dancers, junk and brass bands and a string quartet, among others. Traders will be dressed in period costume and Father Christmas will be making an appearance.

Chamber of commerce chairman Nigel Eadie said it had been a tough year to raise the funds to stage the Dickensian Evening and the Christmas lights but everyone had pulled together to make it happen.

'We are really grateful, not only to the business owners who have contributed, but also to Tavistock Town Council and TaVi and especially West Devon Borough Council, which has really underwritten the entire project and saved the day.

'We are now able to put on an event which will compare with what people have seen in the past. It will be a fantastic evening.'
