A NEW obstacle course for young BMX enthusiasts in Princetown is now up and running, after a survey highlighted the town?s lack of facilities for children.
The consultation, carried out by environmental charity WestDEN for the government funded Invest to Save budget, revealed the lack of amenities was one of the main concerns of adults and children.
A separate survey completed by Princetown youngsters showed they wanted a BMX/skateboard ramp.
A voluntary committee was set up to address the problem by seeking funding for the much needed facilities. The committee was named Kids in Princetown - Playground Equipment Regeneration (KIPPER).
The group obtained £11,943.90 over two years from the Local Network Fund, and £2,900 from West Devon Borough Council. Some funds have been used for the new BMX ramps and obstacles in the park, made from recycled materials.
Angie Williams, KIPPER chairman, said the course provided a safe place for children to ride their bikes off the road.
?It really seems to have taken off and the kids like it,? she said.
?We are very pleased, because it keeps the kids off the road. Before, they were riding their bikes on the road and we wanted a facility so they wouldn?t have to anymore.?
The KIPPER committee has applied for a further £250 from the Unilever Best Foods Community Project Fund to pay for some special playground paint to re-do the old play equipment in the park.
Mrs Williams said the next plan is to replace the willow fence around the play area, which has now been damaged beyond repair, with a post and rail fence with mesh at the bottom to keep dogs out.
It is hoped more play equipment can be added to the present playground next year as further funding comes in.
She added: ?We get a regular income of £41.66 a month donated to us by the fire brigade, who receive the money from the Parish Council for cleaning the playground.
?This used to go to the fire brigade benevolent fund, but they now give it to our committee. We?re extremely grateful for their support.?
