TAVISTOCK Pannier Market had to be evacuated yesterday (Wednesday) after a gas pipe was accidentally punctured during work at the eastern end of the market.
Stalls and shops in the inner perimeter of the market were closed as soon as the smell was noticed, and the alarm was raised.
The shops and market are all owned by the town council. Town clerk Roger Howard said council staff had to move quickly once they had spoken to Transco.
'They told us we had to get everyone out as soon as possible — obviously, potentially, it could be very dangerous,' said Col Howard.
'The shops on the outside of the market, which have inside doors, could stay open, they just have to make sure the back doors are closed. It's the ones on the inside which have had to shut.'
Shivering outside in Bedford Square, Julie Turnock and Sharon Sampson, of Duke's, said they had 'no idea' how long the business would be closed for.
'They said at least an hour. At first they said we didn't need to go, then they advised us it would be better to get out,' said Julie.
The town hall was opened up to stall and shop-owners while the market remained closed.
Bob Vella, of Bob's Café, said: 'We're just waiting for inspectors to turn up now.
'We're all losing business but it was the right thing to do. It's better to be safe than sorry.'
Council staff were still waiting for Transco workmen to arrive as the Times went to press.
Police were also in attendance at the scene.
