Carlsberg South Western League St Austell 2 Callington Town 4 ST Austell continued their poor run as they were beaten at home by a resurgent Callington side that took their unbeaten run to three games in their last away outing of the season. The game exploded into life in the first minute as, in their very first attack, the Lillywhites took the lead. The chance came from the right, and some poor defending by Town's young back four allowed room for James Cooke and he happily fired past keeper Dan Johnson. However the lead lasted barely 60 seconds as from the kick off the ball went back to Johnson who launched a long ball forward. Gareth Jones was first on to the ball and chipped the advancing Martin Qantick in the St Austell goal from fully 25 yards to level matters. Both sides then traded chances before the Saints regained the lead on 12 minutes when another cross on the right saw the ball bounce horrendously in front of teenage defender Dan Moore and Cooke was first to react to the loose ball as he fired home. Callington fought back again with Jones shooting wide after the impressive Dan Discombe had set up the chance and on the half hour, Jones and Danny Zalick combined to free Jones but his shot again went wide of the post. St Austell contented themselves to attacking on the counter and they succeeded in putting a lot of pressure on Callington but could not add to their tally by the break. Whatever Geoff Battams said to his charges at the break once again worked miracles as they came out of the traps in devastating form and within 10 minutes they had turned the game on its end. On 50 minutes, it was again a right wing cross that led to a goal as this time Jason King was on hand to fire past Quantick. Six minutes later and Callington were in the lead as Zalick set up Jones who gleefully scored at the second attempt. Both sides created chances before the end, but it was the visitors who notched up the match winning fourth when Zalick was pulled back in the area and Jones converted the spot kick for his first hat trick of the season and guaranteed three more vital points for his young team. l With the away games now completed for Callington, they turn their attention to no fewer than nine home games on the trot to conclude the season, starting with Saturday's visit of Torpoint Athletic to Ginsters Marshfield Parc.
