Two exciting and very different gardens in Buckland Monachorum will be open for the National Gardens Scheme this Saturday June 28. These are Wildside Nurseries (open from 10 to 5), which is becoming increasingly well known in gardening circles, and the Cider House (open from 11 to 5), which has opened regularly for the scheme over the past 17 years. At Wildside, author, lecturer and gardener Keith Wiley has spent the last four years developing his special interest in naturalistic planting, and has used the freedom of a virgin plot to create a series of microclimates in which a huge variety of plants can flourish. Keen gardeners will appreciate the range of plant material and the skill of a consummate plantsman, while everybody will enjoy the panache of the landscaping. Plants, many unusual and all beautifully grown, are available in the adjoining nursery. The Cider House is an established garden in a beautiful setting next to Buckland Abbey. There is a fine walled kitchen garden and much to admire in the planting and colour schemes. This is the first time the two gardens have opened together on a Saturday, and light lunches and tea will be available from mid-day onwards at the Cider House. The National Gardens Scheme raises money for nursing and caring charities, and last year gave £1.71-million to charity.
