THE splendid new garden created at Milton Abbot School has been officially opened by the chairman of the board of governors.
The garden project was initiated three years ago, when it was decided that due to the growth of the school more room was needed for outside play and recreation.
Instead of laying tarmac, an innovative scheme to build a garden which could also be used as an ?outdoor classroom? got under way.
The garden includes seating areas, features which can be used by teachers and children during lessons such as art, science and environmental studies, plus a performance area for plays, music and drama.
Each class has its own planting area and younger pupils enjoy using the new sandpit.
Norman Hurn, chairman of governors, thanked all who contributed to the project, including the parents? association and local organisations who donated funds to buy plants and materials.
He also paid tribute to Andrew Osborne and Bill Sparks, of Longham Gardens, for the quality of their work and imaginative garden design.
Mr Hurn said visitors were frequently amazed to see such a beautiful garden in a village school.
Headteacher Peter Jones said: ?The garden has become a well-loved feature of the school. It is used every day and has exceeded all our expectations.?
