A TAVISTOCK College student who is hoping to teach English overseas for a year has raised half of the £3,500 she needs to fund the trip.
Jenny Withers, 18, aims to spend her gap-year teaching abroad and is due to jet off in August. She will find out later this month whether she is going to Thailand, Japan or Morocco.
Jenny, who is doing A-levels in English literature, RE and history, applied to the Project Trust, a charitable organisation based in the Inner Hebrides. As part of the selection process, she spent four days at the Trust?s base on the Isle of Coll.
She said: ?I found out I had been chosen on my birthday, and I was thrilled.?
The lucky applicants chosen for the project must finance the trip themselves. So far Jenny has raised £400 from selling home-made cards, £100 from car boot sales and £500 through charitable trust donations. A further £400 has come from a special year-book where people can pay to write a message of support.
There will be a ?wet and wild? session held at Meadowlands on Saturday April 26 to help raise funds for Jenny?s trip. The event is between 5pm and 7pm. Tickets are £2.50 for a swim; £4 to swim and eat in the cafe. Anyone wishing to support Jenny can buy their tickets from Book Stop and Donella?s.
