The tree is decorated in baubles which can be sponsored by individuals or businesses to help raise money to fund NSPCC child protection services locally.
People gathered for the coffee morning and raffle, organised by chairman of NSPCC Tavistock Priscilla Gillett, before watching the Mayor Anne Johnson officially switch the lights on.
Cllr Johnson said: 'This is always a special part of Christmas.
The NSPCC is vital especially locally. It is a really valuable resource and wouldn't happen without volunteers who work tirelessly to raise funds for what they do.'
The Christmas tree was donated by Graham Hawker of Tavistock Pannier Market.
Anyone who would like to sponsor a bauble can do so until 11am on December 18 and will be listed in the Times on the edition of December 20. To sponsor a bauble, call the Times on 01822 613666.
