NORTHLEW'S patronal festival was held on July 6. The afternoon began with the festival service at St Thomas Of Canterbury, conducted by the Rev Ruth Hansford. The special preacher was Mrs Sandra Collier, a lay reader from Hatherleigh. Northlew Silver Band played for the hymns and D Chivers was the organist.
During the service a mixed cast of adults and children gave a short presentation of the murder of Archbishop Thomas A'Beckett. Thanks were expressed to all who took part, particualarly Malcolm James, who stepped in at the last minute to play Becket. The church was full and all enjoyed the hymns at the festival.
The revel followed, at Churchgate, by invitation of Shaun and Morwenna Millership. A large crowd gathered in the field to hear Stephen Collier declare the revel open and the various stalls, games and competitions were well supported.
The children danced around the Maypole. Pippa and Grant Mansfield accompanied the dancing. The band played throughout the afternoon.
An important part of the festival is the sit-down tea and this feast was prepared and served in the marquee, thanks to Tonya,Ruth and helpers.
Thanks were also expressed to all the stallholders, the ladies and all who supported the festival. Special thanks went to Shaun and Wenna for their hospitality.
The total amount raised was, £687.54. The sale of the newly produced church calendars amounted to £101. The calendars are available now, price £5. Contact Mollie Atkinson on 01409 221929 or buy them from Northlew Village Stores.
THE primary school held its annual duck race at Wadland Barton last Friday evening. A large crowd of parents and children watched the race, the winning duck belonging to Laura Butt. Second was Ray Rose and Olive Newton third.
There had been some doubt over the depth of the water to enable the race to take place, but all was well and a good mass of ducks made their way down the river. There was also a barbecue, chocolate tombola and a bar.
MATINS at the parish church, was conducted by Sandra Collier. The organist was D Chivers, who played music by Lefebre- Wely, Handel and Bach.
As it was Sea Sunday ' Eternal Father ' was sung and special prayers for those at sea were offered.
Lessons were read by Betty Dibben, Pat Durston and Marj Rundle were sidesmen.
Evening prayer was conducted by Mr and Mrs D Chivers with Mr Chivers as organist.
