SATURDAY at Okehampton Golf Club saw the men playing the Cyril Masters Salver, a qualifying stableford. Another full field took to the fairways, and the competition was close. Steve Hill won Division One with 41 points, second was Malcolm Hill 40 points (back 9), and third was Alan Hough also 40 points. Division two was won by Russell Dibble 42 points, second Peter Okopski 41 points and third Nick Reilly 39. Winning the third division and the Cyril Masters Salver was Steve Cook with 44 points, second Phil Arthurs 42 points on the back 9 from Ollie Kirby also 42 points. It has been a tremendous week for the ladies of Okehampton Golf Club. On Friday they went to Tavistock to play the semi-finals and hopefully the finals of the President?s Trophy. In the morning Okehampton played Teignmouth, and Ilfracombe played East Devon. The team had a good start with Marcia Holwill winning her match 3-2. Dawn Phillott had a real battle but lost on the 18th. Penny Deakin then won her match 3-2, and Mo Huggins went down the 19th to secure the third win. With Pam Jarman losing on the 17th it meant team captain Cherry James had to win to make the finals. It was a close match and Cherry managed to win on the 17th hole. After a quick break, the players were called to the tee, this time against Ilfracombe. The first two matches, Marcia and Dawn, though close, went Ilfracombe?s way. Then Penny won 3-2, Marcia Jones won on the 18th and Lyn Hazelton - brought into the team as Mo Huggins could not manage another 18 holes, due to a chest infection - won her match 5-4. But Pam lost, leaving Cherry needing to win her match to take the trophy. This turned into a marathon with the county officials thinking about having to stop play due to bad light. Regrettably for Okehampton, Cherry, unable to convert a birdie putt, lost on the 21st hole, conceding the President?s Trophy to Ilfracombe, leaving Okehampton with the runner?s-up prize. On Wednesday the ladies played a qualifying medal for the LGU Pin. It was a close contest with Lin Atkinson winning the silver division and the pin, on the back 9 with a net 71, from Marcia Holwill. Third was Penny Deakin with a net 74. The bronze division was won by Sally Griffin net 72, second was Ann Brokenbrow net 74 and third was Maureen Howe net 76. Sunday saw the prestigious Dora Milner Cup being played for. This is a mixed foursomes, drawn partners, format. Another close fixture ensued with vice-captain Allen Deakin and his partner Maureen Willcocks winning, on countback, from Rod Glanville and Lorna Rolfe - they both had a net 67.5. In third place was the junior captain Jonny Rattenbury and Lin Atkinson with a net 68.
