KELLY College?s cricket teams enjoyed their first outing of the new season against Truro School. Although the U14s and U15s both suffered heavy defeats, there were individual successes in these matches, notably Freddy Frost?s commanding innings of 40 (out of a total of only 60) in the U14 game.

Truro also proved too strong for Kelly at second team level, losing by 80 runs, but the first team clash at Truro proved a more even contest with scores of 139-4 (Truro) against 110-4 (Kelly) resulting in a drawn game.

Kelly?s only win of the day came in the U13 match, also played at Truro, in which Kelly restricted Truro to 81-8, thanks largely to accurate bowling and fine fielding. Kelly successfully overhauled the Truro total with Nathan Probert (28) leading the visitors to a 7-wicket win.

On Saturday May 3, Plymouth College visited Kelly to complete matches at first team, U15 and U13 level

despite continuously overcast and drizzly conditions in which the major surprise was that all games were played to a conclusion. Predictably, with the weather making it difficult to score runs quickly all three matches resulted in draws.

In the first team game, Plymouth?s painstaking 137-8 declared was never a realistic target for Kelly, who were given only 20 overs to chase. Andrew Reader led the way with a dashing 44, but Kelly ran out of time at 116-3.

The U15 match produced a slightly closer finish, with scores of 132-2 declared (Plymouth) and 115-4, in which the highest contribution was Charlie Brereton?s 27.

In the U13 game, the highlight was Patrick Jeynes? score of 28 out of Kelly?s total of 66-7, in which no other batsman made double figures. It was this lack of batting support which prevented Kelly, batting second, overhauling Plymouth?s first innings score of 81-7 declared.
