TWO Year 4 children from Okehampton Primary School enjoyed a morning at Waitrose recently, selling produce to customers that had been grown at school.

Jessica Illot and Shea Rogers were encouraged to sell their produce at Waitrose following the donation of a Waitrose ‘Grow and Sell’ seed kit earlier in the year containing compost, pots, badges and seeds for the children to grow.

Produce included baby beetroot, mixed lettuce leaf bags, broad beans, peas, Swiss chard and bunches of lavender.

Pupils have been utilising the many growing areas in school including raised beds and a keyhole garden to grow a variety of vegetables that have been incorporated into school dinners, sold in the staff room and sold to parents at a table top sale in the playground.

Next year, pupils from Okehampton Primary School will be working closely with The Food for Life Partnership in an effort to work towards their silver and gold Food for Life Awards.

They will learn more about food provenance, supporting local food producers by participating in the ‘Dartmoor Saves More Food Project’, visiting local farms and improving their composting of cooked food waste.
