CENTRAL Devon MP Mel Stride has asserted Britain is moving 'from rescue to recovery' following the government spending review for 2015/16.

Chancellor George Osborne announced government spending plans for 2015-16 and cuts to individual departmental budgets last week.

Government spending is to total £745billion, with further savings of £11.5billion needed. Devon County Council faces having to cut at least £100million from its budget over the next four years because of government savings. The council has already cut costs by £90million in the last four years.

The government also announced plans for a £100billion modernisation of the UK's infrastructure, including new homes, road repairs and improved flood protection.

Mel Stride MP said: 'Britain is moving from rescue to recovery, and today's Spending Round sets out the latest action to secure that recovery.

'By protecting spending on schools and health, capping welfare and cutting waste in Whitehall it delivers for the hardworking people of Central Devon.'
