Kelly College 1st XI 1
Tavistock Hockey Club 8
A festive game was arranged between the Kelly College 1st XI and a mix of players from across the three men's teams.
Tavistock fielded a side consisting of all three generations from the Edwards family, including the 78 year old grandfather. The three members of the Cowen family and the Honeys, which included daughter Robynne, who competed well as the lone female on the pitch.
The game started briskly with Tavistock playing a very structured style of play but found themselves a goal down in the first 10 minutes when a breakaway from the Kelly defence saw a fine move culminate in a superb strike into the Tavistock net.
The game ebbed and flowed in both directions and the scores were soon level when Robynne Honey equalised with powerful strike from close range.
With Kelly mixing their squad and Tavistock mixing their ages, the teams took a while to settle into their own patterns of play. Tavistock began to sort out their structure and tactics the quicker and soon began to dominate possession.
With the Kelly keeper showing some fine form in goal, increasing the score line for Tavistock was proving a hard task. Eventually the experience showed through and Tavistock camped in the Kelly half and notched another seven goals, which eased the frustrations.
The game was played in fine spirit throughout, with Kelly never giving up the game.
The club thanked Kelly College for organising the match, Bob Cowen for the team management, Fiona Dunn and Ann Shepherd for umpiring and Phil Edwards for supplying 138 years' worth of hockey players across three generations and some post match celebratory bubbly.
