AN innovative scheme to encourage people to eat more healthily was this week launched by Okehampton and Torridge Age Concern.
The scheme, being run in partnership with Mid Devon Primary Care Trust, involves green fingered gardeners and free seeds being offered by Age Concern.
Barrie Duke, chief officer for Age Concern, said seeds would be offered free to volunteer gardeners willing to grow vegetables for people on low incomes.
Barrie said a percentage of the crop could be kept by the gardeners, probably half, with the remainder distributed to families or individuals with restricted financial means.
He said: ?It?s a complete experiment to see if we can encourage people to eat more vegetables. It?s a simple idea but they?re often the best.
?We?re looking for about 50 people ? we want them to tell us what they want to grow and we?ll go and see what we can get.?
Barrie said the scheme would not be restricted to seeds ? young plants like tomatoes and runner beans would also be suitable.
Anyone who would like to get involved in the vegetable growing project or who needs more information should call Age Concern on 01837 55838 or call in at 2 Crediton Road, Okehampton between 9.30am and 1pm.
