A SCHEME developed by Devon County Council to support residents affected by the Government welfare reforms will come to Okehampton Library later this month.
The pioneering 'Free Fridays' scheme has been piloted in three towns across Devon and has proved so successful it is now being expanded to include a further eight.
The sessions, which offer those seeking work or claiming benefits up to two hours' free computer and internet access each Friday, will be available in Okehampton Library from Friday, May 31.
'Free Fridays' was developed in response to the Government's 'Digital by Default' strategy, to help those who are unable to use IT or who do not have internet access at home.
Staff will provide support for the public on a range of relevant subjects, including using government websites to find information, online form filling, setting up an e-mail account, job seeking, and how to put together a CV.
They will also signpost people to relevant local agencies who can offer further advice, support or training opportunities. There are also plenty of useful books and online resources available in the library.
Ciara Eastell, head of the county council's libraries, culture and heritage services, said: 'The pilot for this project has been enormously successful, and I am so pleased that we are now able to offer the "Free Friday" sessions at another eight libraries across the county.
'Our libraries are about far more than just books — they offer easy access to a whole range of valuable resources all in one place. Using them to provide practical help to the local community during these difficult times is really important and the support offered has proved extremely popular, particularly with jobseekers and those who will be affected by the welfare changes.
'By working with other local organisations, such as Job Centre Plus, we can provide the most effective service possible to inform and support people. I would urge anyone affected by the changes to the benefits system or those looking for a job to go along and take advantage of Free Fridays.'
