Tavistock 44 Wessex 0 AFTER going 15 points up by half time the superior fitness and team skills saw Tavistock run away with the game in the second half to record a six try victory. This was even more impressive taking into account the number of changes made from the normal starting 15 because of unavailabilities and injuries prior to the game and further injuries to key players injuried during the game itself. The Tavistock forwards put in an excellent display with Matt Cole, Will Brown and Paul Williams having storming games in the loose and the link at the lineout between hooker Ben Sutton and his jumpers Darren Sutton and Andy Hunt provided good first phase ball. Tavistock opened the scoring midway through the first half when from set play Lawrence Evans' arching run saw him round the Weesex defence to score. Tavistock extended their lead before half time with a try from flanker Will Brown and a conversion and penalty goal from Sam Smerdon. Unfortunately before half time Tavistock lost two of their most influential backs with Doug Lloyd departing with a reoccurrence of a hamstring injury and Lee Greatrex leaving to have eight stitches inserted in a head wound. The second half started with Tavistock keeping Wessex under pressure and they were soon rewarded with a second try from Will Brown. Soon after after the Tavistock pack had camped on the Wessex line veteran prop Nick Cox ploughed over for a popular score. Centre Danny Evans then helped himself to a score in the corner and as the game drew to a close winger Ben Neal, on as a replacement for Lawrence Evans, completed the try scoring. Sam Smerdon kicked three conversions and and one penalty goal. l On Saturday Tavistock entertain Okehampton at Sandy Park in the Cornwall and Devon League. Kick-off is at 3pm.
