A YOUNG footballer from Lewdown is emerging as a real prospect after some impressive performances with Yeovil Town's U16s team.
Although only just 15 six footer Ben Williams is already playing for the Football League division one side's U16s team and recently scored the winner in their 1-0 victory against Swansea.
Ben plays anywhere on the left — turning out for the Glovers U15s and U16s at left back, in midfield and on the wing.
The talented youngster, who played junior football at Lifton and Okehampton Argyle U14s, had trials with Plymouth Argyle but was snapped up by Yeovil Town, who offered a place with their U15s team. Ben has signed schoolboy terms with the club. It means, however, a round trip of 180 miles on Tuesdays and Thursday for Ben and his dad, as well as games on Saturdays.
He comes from a sporting family — his grandad Bob Westlake is the owner of Alder Sportswear and played for Okehampton Argyle, while his other grandfather was a Welsh schoolboy international.
Geraint, his father, said: ' Ben would like to be a footballer but he is realistic about his prospects. He has got to keep working hard at his game as there are thousands of boys out there trying to make it as a professional. Ben is already playing in a team a year above him, which is a good indicator of his abilities.'
Mr Williams said Ben is also working hard at Okehampton College, where hopefully he will go on to take his A levels.
