PRIMARY school children throughout West Devon and the Tamar Valley area have the opportunity to use their skill and imagination to scoop a super prize in a special competition being organised as part of this year's Tavistock Food and Drink Festival. The cookery competition is being run by Masterchef Peter Gorton of the Horn of Plenty, who is closely involved in the food festival. Jeffrey Stackhouse, festival chairman, said: 'Peter Gorton has been a vital element in all of our four food festivals and has always ensured that his cookery demonstrations include a kiddies' corner, where children can experience first hand real food and ingredients. 'Like Peter, we believe that it is vitally important to encourage children to appreciate healthy and wholesome food made, wherever possible, from locally sourced ingredients.' The cookery competition will be based on a single dish recipe, either a starter, main course or dessert, which will be judged on presentation, a healthy recipe and the content of locally sourced ingredients. Mr Stackhouse said: 'We will be asking schools to put forward two entries — one from ages five to seven, and one from ages eight to eleven. 'Peter Gorton and his judging team will then select two schools from each age group to participate in a final cook-off during the food festival.' Mr Stackhouse said Peter will personally cook each of the four final recipes and the dishes will be judged by two of the festival celebrity chefs. The winning children from each group will win an iPod Shuffle and the school will win an engraved cup. Applications from primary schools should be sent direct to the festival chairman at [email protected]">[email protected] or telephone 01822 613016.
