AS part of World Diabetes Day last Sunday, Specsavers in Okehampton has joined forces with the International Diabetes Federation to raise awareness of the free eye examinations available to those with the condition.
It is vitally important for diabetes sufferers to have their eyes examined at least once every two years so that problems can be detected in the early stages, sometimes even before symptoms are noticeable.
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when small blood vessels in the retina become blocked or when fragile new blood vessels become prone to bleeding. A condition which generally affects people who have had diabetes for at least five years, if untreated, it can lead to blindness.
Diabetics also have a higher risk of developing cataracts or glaucoma, both of which can lead to loss of vision.
Julia Peggs, director of Specsavers in Okehampton, said: ?Early detection and treatment of diabetes and related medical condition is vital.
?Thanks to improvements in screening technology, we are able to pick up any number of sight-related problems including cataracts and signs of glaucoma at an early stage, so they can be treated more successfully.
?We are therefore urging all our customers and potential customers to have their eyes examined once every two years to ensure their sight is properly monitored and prescriptions are up to date.?
