OKEHAMPTON Primary School is inviting families from all over the area to help fly the flag this weekend in celebration of Family Learning Week. This Saturday the school hosts a fun-packed FLAG (Family Learning Action Group) day for children and young people aged from five to 16 years old. Among the activities on offer will be African drumming, circus skills, card making, kite making, craft with natural materials, Morris dancing, archery and much more. The events are organised as part of the Campaign for Learning?s national awareness campaign to raise the profile and importance of discovering new skills and bringing the family together. Family Learning Week is a nationwide awareness campaign running from October 7-15. Events will be running at the school from 10.30am-4pm, during the lunchtime break, Clive Pig will entertain everyone with his storytelling. Nicholas Allen, an author and illustrator of more than thirty children?s books, will be visiting the library and talking about his books and drawings with pupils. Nicholas worked as a waiter, spent three weeks in a publisher?s office and as a part-time teacher of a life class before he published his first book, The Hefty Fairy in 1989. Since then, he has been a full-time writer and illustrator. Many of his books are bestsellers, including The Queen?s Knickers, Jesus? Christmas Party, The Happy Princess (the life of Diana), Cinderella?s Bum, The Dove and Where Willy Went. His books have won awards and been translated into twenty languages. He is also the author of Hilltop Hospital, a book that has been adapted into a BAFTA-winning television series for CITV. Nicholas Allan will visit Okehampton Library on Friday, October 13.
