HAVING looked in several diaries and calendars I am unaware that there is an official event to celebrate on May 5.

Our town hall in Tavistock is not a building of local administration but a particularly gracious social venue for hire.

Passing through Bedford Square on May 5 I was aware that the flag of the European Union was being flown on the town hall flag pole. A close source informed me that this flag was on an 'official' list to fly.

Under the Town and Country (Control of Advertising) regulations, schedule 2, the flag of any country is permitted to be flown without planning permission. The European Union is not a nation or sovereign state.

Two questions for our town council. Has planning permission been obtained?

If not, as I suspect, why is this 'official' list able to supersede the laws of this country by sanctioning the illegal flying of this flag?
