MARK Hennessey, newly appointed head coach for Tavistock Swimming Club saw the squad get off to a flying start in the first round of the Speedo League at Weymouth on Saturday. Mark set an example to the squad by competing in the Mens Open Individual Medley in which he took a very convincing first place. In the team events, the Boys 11/under Freestyle Relay team of Felix Davies, Sam Campbell, Kameron Brimble and Matt Edwards fought back in a nail-biting finish to take second place. The Girls? 15/under Freestyle Relay team of Kirsty Best, Alice Warnett, Laura Aspen and Laura Radgick and the Boys? 15/under Freestyle Relay team of Jake Broome, Tom Waddington, Tom Crocker and Ross Williams both got full points for Tavistock. The Boys? 15/under Medley team of Chris Mills, Tom Waddington, Ross Williams and Jake Broome also took first place. In the individual races the team took eleven first places with Sam Campbell claiming two of these in the Boys 11/under Butterfly and Breaststroke. Ross Williams also got Tavistock full points in both the 15/under Butterfly and Freestyle. Tom Waddington took first place in the Boys 13/under Breaststoke and Sam Harmsworth first in the 13/under Freestyle. The girls won three first places with Laura Radgick taking an impressive first place in the 15/under Freestyle, Catriona Smith achieved first place in the 13/under Backstroke and Kirsty Best first in the 15/under Breaststroke. In total the Club achieved twenty-two personal best times, thirteen first places and came second overall against some strong opposition. Mark and Assistant Coach, Wendy Stephens nominated Ross Williams as swimmer of the gala for his outstanding swim in two individual events. Tavistock?s team spirit was very apparent with a warm welcome going to Alexandra Stoecker who was representing Tavistock for the first time. Final points: Weymouth 188; Tavistock 175; Devonport Royal 157; Bristol Penguins 147; Frome 68.
