THE biggest flower festival ever held in Tavistock Parish Church last weekend was a stupendous success, according to organiser Janette Rawlings.

Crowds of people have flocked through the aisles of the ancient church to see the dozens of stunning displays, all representing a different proverb.

Mrs Rawlings said the interest shown in the festival had been 'unbelievable'.

'We've had hundreds of people in, we've been inundated — I'm absolutely delighted,' she said.

'We had more than 80 people coming in just to listen to the organ recital — I just don't believe it, the whole thing has been marvellous and the comments in the visitors' book have been lovely. It's made it worth all the hard work.'

More than 30 colourful floral displays made up the festival, representing hours of work by organisations such as Tavistock Bellringers, Tavistock Lions, the Wharf and the Church Youth Club.

Janet said: 'The trouble that people have gone to is just incredible and the way they've interpreted the proverbs are wonderful.'

In addition to the flowers, ploughman's lunches and cream teas were selling fast in the parish centre.

'I made seven-and-a-half pounds of chicken liver paté — and it went by Friday lunchtime!' said Mrs Rawlings.

The festival also included performances by Stannary Brass Band and a choir and organ concert in the church

Mrs Rawlings said she was very grateful to everyone for their wonderful floral displays — and the help of the organising committee.

'I've had wonderful support from them — they're brilliant,' she said.
