Jewson South Western League

Tavistock 3

Wadebridge 2

LANCE Blackmore's letter to the Times (August 17, Come on you Lambs) seemed to have stirred some readers into making the short trip to Langsford Park for this evening fixture.

They were not disappointed with the display from both teams who gave their all in a five-goal thriller that could have been even more had not the woodwork saved each side from scoring twice more.

It should certainly whet the appetite for those who saw the Lambs for the first time and encourage a few more to 'Come on Down'.

Lee Cansfield got the ball rolling in the first half to send a curling free kick past former Lambs keeper Steve Wardle. Lee Ireland another ex-Lamb equalised then gave the Bridgers the lead early in the second half before Cansfield got the Lambs back on level terms on the hour.

He completed his hat-trick in the last minute when he glanced in a header to send the Lambs back to the top of the table and send home the newly converted supporters happy.

Millbrook 1

Tavistock 2

THE Lambs recorded their fourth victory of the season against much fancied Millbrook.

The first half an hour lacked incident with both defences on top and there was an intriguing battle between Millbrook striker Jeff Babb and brother Darren in the Lambs defence with Jeff coming off worse in their challenges. It eventually resulted in Darren being booked early in the second half.

The Lambs broke the deadlock on the half-hour, Dean Tongue played the ball forward to Wayne Crow who fed it inside to John Gosling. He cut inside his marker to delicately chip James Dungey for a peach of a goal.

Mark Crowley should have equalised with a header early in the second half but made amends with 15 minutes to go when he side-footed a pass from Andy Bowker into the net.

The Lambs looked the more dangerous in the closing stages and fully deserved their winner ten minutes from time. Tony Cusack played the ball forward - at first it looked like the keeper's ball but he hesitated and Lee Cansfield won it and from an acute angle squeezed the ball in at the far post.

On the whole the Lambs fully deserved their victory to keep them perched at the top of the league after five games.

l Tavistock P & D news Chris Abbott and Craig Smith are delighted with the start to the new campaign with two wins out of two. They beat much fancied side Plymstock 6-3 and followed that up last Saturday with a 3-0 win over Prince Rock. Their early form will be severely put to the test this Saturday when they take on Champions Plymouth Civil Service.

l Lambs official Eric Pinch was disappointed to miss the Wadebridge game as he was away on a cycling holiday from Tavistock to Ilfracombe and back (Sustrans Route 27 Devon Coast to Coast).

Eric had to put up with watching Barnstaple v Taunton but kept himself informed of the score at Langsford Park via his mobile phone.
