TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club played ten competitive matches during last week and ended up winning five and losing five.
Pride of place went to club catering secretary Dorice Hicks, who played in the skip position for the first time during the ladies' game against Plymouth Elizabethans on Thursday.
Dorice led her team of Marlene Paramor, Shirley Thorington and Anne Doidge to a 26-19 win. The other two rinks in the match ended with skip Betty Browse losing 19-31 and Yvonne Meneer's team achieving a 21-16 victory.
The week began badly for the Tavistock club, who lost both their Sunday and Monday home matches by wide margins. Sunday's game against Buckfastleigh ended in an 87-59 victory for the visitors with only Tavistock skip Tony Coombs seeing his team of Anne Doidge, George Barrand and David Perry win (21-11). Skips Roy Northam, Norman Paramor and Colin Tremaine, all saw their teams lose.
Monday's battle with East Grinstead ended in a 96-68 victory for the visitors who won three of the five triples rinks played. Tavistock's skip Ron Cooper led his team of Jill Lacayo and Lionel Sims to a 17-10 win, and skip Der Saunders won 13-11, thanks to his team of Arthur Worth and Joan Northey.
The men's county trophy team came good at Yelverton on Tuesday evening where they won three rinks and drew the fourth, to take the match 101-47 thanks to winning skips Eric Stevens (30-10), Bernie Downs (29-10), Mike Allen (25-10), with skip Colin Tremaine drawing (17-17).
The visit to Plympton Bowling Club on Wednesday afternoon resulted in an 86-69 defeat with Roy Northam being the only skip to achieve a win (19-18).
The men's section evening league match played at home against Plymco Unity Park resulted in an 88-62 victory for Tavistock with good wins coming through skips Mike Allen (30-11) and Bernie Downs (23-14).
Wednesday evening saw a Tavistock men's team comprehensively beaten in the Foxland trophy competition, which involves five rinks all playing different format games — singles, doubles, triples etc. Tavistock lost on all five rinks to make an early exit from the competition.
The men's section visit to the Civil Service Club in Plymouth, to play a retired civil servants team ended in a defeat for Tavistock, who saw teams skipped by Norman Paramor and John Smith the only winners of their rinks.
The ladies' section played two matches during the week, winning one and losing the other. Wednesday's away match against City Bus resulted in a 45-34 win with the team skipped by club vice- chairman Betty Browse losing 17-19 and skip Yvonne Meneer leading her team of Jean Flay, Hazel Lovell and Marlene Paramor to a 28-12 win.
